Lighthouse Love: Free Climbs, Free Coffee and Free Ghost Stories (if you dare).
New Jersey lighthouses not only serve as wonderful educational tools, rich in maritime history, but they offer a great escape for a day of fun for the entire family. What better time to take advantage of all that lighthouses have to offer (including some special perks), than National Lighthouse Day!
The Garden State is home to 18 lighthouses, 11 of which are open to the public. If you're looking for the tallest, you don't have to look too far. With its 171 feet of grandeur, the Absecon Lighthouse bests all the others when it comes to its towering height. It will take you 228 steps to ascend to the top, where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the Atlantic City seaboard as well as the satisfaction that you were able to fit in a nice little workout as well. There's even a selfie cam at the top to capture the moment.
If you head out there today, kids 12 and under climb for FREE (with an adult) from 10am - 5pm, with the last climb scheduled for 4:30pm.
There will also be special activities from 1pm - 4pm with games like badminton, corn hole, frisbee and the chance to run through a 30 foot sprinkler. For the adults looking for a little afternoon pick-me-up to keep up with the kids, Hayday Coffee will be serving up some delicious java - so, you can bring a lawn chair and caffeinate while you watch the kiddos do their thing.
The fun continues with ghost stories told from 3:30pm - 6pm and from 5pm - 7pm (last climb 6:30pm) you can enjoy a Sunset Wine-tasting with live music from Groove Heart. Tickets are $25 per person for the tasting, but proceeds will go to preserve this area icon.
For more information visit www.abseconlighthouse.org. For tickets to the wine-tasting, call the Lighthouse at (609) 449-1360.
Happy Lighthouse Day! I may just see you at the top. ;)
